6 Wheel ATV: Their Big Comeback
First introduced in the 1960's, the 6x6 ATV (all-terrain vehicle) was being sold by over 50 companies by the 1970's. The popularity of the 6-wheeled ATV withered due to a few factors. One large reason was Honda’s introduction of a 3-wheeled ATV that sold for under $1,000. Up until the mid-90’s most 6 wheel ATV dealers went out of business. Recently, however, ATV enthusiasts have begun to look at the 6 wheel ATV as if it had just been introduced—with curiosity. Because the 6x6 ATVs had been out of the picture for over 20 years and people were getting used to the 3-wheeled ATVs, people started noticing them again. Currently, the main dealers for these 6-wheeled ATVs include Max and Argo. Many 6x6 and 8X8 ATVs are “amphibious” which allows riders to ride from land to water and vice versa with ease. The new 8x8 Argo Avenger will be available in the spring of 2004.
Argo offers the following 6x6 ATVs: the Vanguard, Bigfoot, and Conquest. This sized ATV can usually carry up to 4 passengers in addition to the gear and has a loading capacity of up to 700 lbs. These larger ATVs are equipped to go into different depths of water due to their ability to float.
